Ian van der Westhuizen was born and raised in Cape Town. He has loved acting ever since he first stepped on stage when he started school and never wanted to leave again. He started by performing at the Tygerberg Eisteddfod and throughout the years he was rewarded for his work. In school he was part of various plays. His main achievement was winning first prize at the National ATKV Tienertoneel Competition in 2009.
Ian van der Westhuizen wanted to learn more about what it took to be a professional performer and subsequently studied drama at Stellenbosch University where he has worked with his role models – Nicol Holm, Antoinette Kellerman and Stian Bam. Ian van der Westhuizen had the opportunity to work professionally with Hansie Visagie, Marthinus Basson, Riaan Visman, Chris Pienaar and Lizelle de Bruyn.
In 2016 he was part of the new movement Uitkampeteater at the KKnK. He took part in the project by writing, directing and acting in his own production with great success. Ian van der Westhuizen did quite a few voice work in 2016 and was most proud of the character “Trevor van Zyl” on RSG’s radio drama “Die Verkiesingsdrama”. His passion for the industry also include writing, directing and acting.
