Gys was born in Roodepoort in 1960, matriculating at Hoërskool Linden. While at school he had two bands, namely ?Die drie slapchips? and ?Bronco?.
After school he began his national service in Kimberley. During his second year he met Lochner de Kock and Marie Human in Windhoek ? it was there that he did his first professional acting in Die drie van der Walts. The experience just felt right, and after that he was ready to tackle his first year of Drama at UCT. Being obstreperous he only completed the first year of the three-year course. He?d say acting is in my blood, as my parents met during an amateur theatre production.
In 1983 he joined PACT and this is where Gys really started honing his craft. He was fortunate enough because people like Marius Weyers, Sandra Prinsloo and Tobie Cronjé were in the company at that stage. He listened, watched and learned. For the first 10 years of his career Gys only did theatre work. It felt as if he was part of the struggle, with pieces like Die Spinner (with its anti-war sentiment), as well as Diepe Grond and Sing jy van bomme, which truly delved into the Afrikaner psyche. In 2007 he toured the country with the production, Die Afrikaner.
Gys?s first big TV role came in 1993, when he played Barry McGregor in Triptiek 1.
Subsequently he played lead parts in Sewende Laan and Binnelanders and a support role in Isidingo.
He appeared in Malan & Kie on SABC 2.
He still prefers acting on stage, as it gives an actor greater control over the end product. It?s also more of a process than acting for television is ? there time constraints and money are always an issue. Gys is traveling through the karoo with his one man show, Groen Ghoen, in which he performs 42 characters.
He really likes his chosen profession, playing music, preparing food and making love. Gys lives in Knysna with his life partner, Jaci Smith. They basically enjoy the simple pleasures of home life... and rugby, which he is crazy about.
Gys was one of the contestants on the 2010 Celebrity Survivor reality series. He was voted off in 7th position, but walked away winning a car.
