He embarked on an acting career in theatre, but soon changed direction and distinguished himself as theatre director of such plays as:
Somewhere on the Border by Anthony Ackerman for which he was awarded the Rosalie van der Gucht prize for Directors in 1987;
Piekniek by Dingaan (with the infamous Kinders van Verwoerd team) which received the Best of the Festival Award at the Grahamstown Festival;
Big Boys by Charles Fourie which garnered a Vita award;
various classics and contemporary South African work, such as Jeanne Goosen's Koffer in die Kas.
Gerrit appeared in several movies: Jans Rautenbach's Broer Matie, Sweet and Short by Gray Hofmeyr, Matthew (Regardt van den Berg), The Mangler (Tobe Hooper).
Directing for Television soon became Gerrit's new artistic niche.

In 2006 Gerrit's contribution to Television Drama was awarded with a medal of honour from the Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns. He also receives the ATKV Veertjie award for Best Director in 2007.
