George van Rooyen, a native of rural Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape, is no stranger to the stage. As a child he performed in various cabarets and small scale stage productions. He trained in the performing arts at Stageworld Theatre School where he specialised in speech and drama. He also completed his advanced performance arts diploma and his associate level speech and drama with Trinity Guildhall College of London.
A versatile actor, George was seen in various productions on stage to the likes of Fugard’s Sorrows and Rejoicings, Jean Genet’s The Balcony and Nick Hall’s Eat Your Heart Out to name a few. His unique ability to do character voices and accents allowed him to work extensively as a radio voice artist and on occasion reading news on air.
At the beginning of his career he dedicated himself to actor training, teaching Theatre History, Radio Acting, and stage design on a tertiary level. His passion for education lead him to run several development programmes including “The Born Free” theatre group which he started in Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth. The programme was dedicated to train children in theatre to create a means of dialogue with which they can reach out to their peers.
George also works as a script writer and stage manager for varies touring theatre companies.
